Thanks again...

Thanks again for a great class!  I hope you all had a good time and learned a thing or two.  I certainly enjoyed spending my Wednesday nights with you!  As a parting gift, I invite you to post any WIP to the blog for one more round of notes (though the notes may have to wait until next month when I'm out of crunch time).  Also, here's a link to the lecture on "Eyes" (which I didn't finish in class).

Anim Jam topic: Alien Encounter

Just a reminder!  Anim Jam clips are due next Wednesday in our final class!  Exactly 100 frames, any animation medium you like, blocking is fine.  Topic is open to interpretation.  Prizes will be awarded.  I hope you all can participate!

Question For Everyone

Hi everyone,

As you've heard me say, technology hates me..

My computer has started acting up again, showing similar issues that I had last term, in which Victor is well aware of.  Out of curiosity, my question to everyone is:

1) How much RAM are you working with in Maya, and

2) which versions of Maya are you using?

Maya 2015 and 2016 have given me a handful of issues in the past, which is why I stick to my old 2010 version, but I'm wondering if said issues go hand in hand with my "vintage" computer (2009 iMac).

Thank you in advance and happy 4th!

Bring in your Maya files

Hi All,
I'm told the Mac in our classroom has been upgraded with more RAM, and seeing that I'm running a little short on lecture material I thought it might be good to open up some of your shots in Maya.  I think this would be especially useful for those of you in spline or polish mode.  I'm no whiz in Maya, but I can fix things!  So feel free to bring in your Maya files, and don't forget to bring along any referenced characters or models in case we don't have copies in the classroom.  See you tomorrow!

Weight and Hitch

Hi,

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Victor, I was wondering if you could take a look at the hitch that was happening when the girl stepped back from the mirror, as well as her weight around fr 90.  I moved her foot so it was under her body more.  I haven't delved into her arm/hand animation or the eye direction quite yet.

I was also curious if you could refresh my memory about your note on her shrug.  It seems that when I was writing my notes in class, on one line I only wrote, "shrug should be more."  Lol very vague on my part.  Do you think it should be more emphasized?  I'm planning on showing her exhale and her nostrils flaring, as you suggested, as well as fixing her hand plant on her hips.  I just feel like I'm forgetting one bit...

IP

Hello!

Well I've tackle the notes from class (working on sober sisters exhale, and her arm at the end.  As well as drunk sisters bounce after the fall)

I also was working on the sober sisters walk in and then cleaning up the first 58ish frames of drunk sister.  Im feeling that her movement throughout that move (28-46 ish) is a little clunky.  While working on it to clean it I think I'm fussing a little too much in areas.  I don't know, what do you think.  Thank you in advance!

Finally Splined

Hi,

This weekend I tried bringing the rest of my shot up since last class, and so now everything is FINALLY splined!  Beware - the first 50 frames or so are really swimmy and looking a little shady.  I'm also still working on the walk backward, but I thiiiink that's finally looking better.

Moving foward, I'm looking to add better transitions through the extremes and soften up the areas where the characters are hitting walls, along with offsetting, etc.

Thank you!
Jamie

Giuliana_Blocking_Pass

Hi Victor

Sorry I couldn't come to class on Wed, it's been a pretty busy week. Anyways, I finally finished my blocking for the shot so here is the link. It gets a little rough towards the end but I just wanted to put everything there so we could see it complete.
The animation gets up to 300 frames right now.

Here is the link

Sincere boy?

Not sure if it would be better to have the kid offer up his toy to gramps....but I felt like that's a pretty bold move considering he's a stranger. So I thought a shy wave might be better :) Please let me know what you think! Thanks!!

Also Victor, I wanted to think of ideas for my next shot. What should be next on my reel? I want to get rid of everything after 0:45. Please let me know!

Jaw clench on Giacomo

Does anyone know how to make the jaw clench for Giacomo? I can't find a control that will do that...and scaling any part of that area just makes him look chubby....

Please help! THANKS!

Messy but splined

Hello all! Hope everyone is surviving the heat!

Soooo I have a rough splined out shot. Not easy with everything I have going on in this shot.  I hope it's holding up well.  The timing is roughed in.  There is NO offsetting yet.  I just wanted to see if everything is reading.  I've shortened the walk in. and right now it's starting at frame 10 which I can add to sober sisters hold at around f87 is.  There's constraints that I want to hold off moving.

For the most part, is is working? Thank you in advance!! Ellen

Just a quick thought..

Hi Victor,

Before I head into splining, I wanted to pop this on here to see if the changes I made per the notes in class look ok.  I'm mainly curious if you think the girl's reaction/sigh around fr 139 reads for long enough.  It feels a little quick to me at the moment, but I know I'm over frame limit!

Thank you in advance!  To splines I go!

Blocking Plus-ish

Hey all! I hope you had a great weekend!

So this week was making the notes work, and then I was adding some visual changes like both of their skins to make them look different and I added a blend shape to the window seat pad (so it didnt look so stiff). I also have some VERY rough examples of possible cam moves.  See what you think.

Thanks in advance! -Ellen

Shot Re-block

Hi everyone,

I re-blocked the latter half of my shot based on the notes in class.  Well, this is still more like layout plus.  :P

That being said, I need to work on her walk backwards, and on getting clearer attitudes and posing/gestures, but I wanted to show this before I went further.

Victor, since this is way over the frame limit already, do you think this shot still works if I don't show the girl's reaction to the dog "approving" at the end?   I actually hadn't intended to show it, but I'm wondering if it needs it.  I do plan on doing a subtle change in her demeanor as the dog is wagging his tail.

Oh, and for the walk right now - I want to overlap the gestures she's doing (stationary, at the moment) with her walking backwards.  That's next!

Hope you like it!

Thanks,

Plane ride storyboard

Hi everyone,

Here's a quick and dirty update on what I was thinking for my shot. Please let me know what you think. I'll just be setting the scene, but I just want to make sure I'm going the right path before I'm too deep in the blocking.

Hi Victor and Classmates,

So I chose 3 expressions, but I want to make sure I'm going the right direction and that I make the changes before I get in too deep.

Here's what I have so far. Thanks so much!

Fred Poses

Hi Victor,

I'm working on the Fred poses, and would like to see if I'm heading in the right direction.  I have not started transitioning yet, so this is just a video of the 3 still poses I chose: #31, #23, and #8.

I also still need to shape the eyes better.  I'd also like your advice on the geo clashing, especially in the outer SL eyebrow on my last pose (it's creating a weird crease).  I'm trying to get those extremes but the rig only likes to go so far, it seems.

Giuliana - Ideas for Blocking

Hi Victor, guys and girls

I was thinking about what you said in class about me doing something more broad with full body acting, and I got back to some old shots that were never finished but that I still like because of the idea behind them.

Here are the links for them.

1. Window Guy

http://syncsketch.com/playground/8881f01e2ba64cc0913d3acec3a9f50e#81567

2. Roman Guy
http://syncsketch.com/playground/9295a0c5b5ff4d6ba74a5cf123f8739d#81568

* I would like to change the ending of this for him going with the ball accidentally.

I came up with ideas too.

1.  10 - 11 Year Old Shaolin Warrior inside of a temple looking for a treasure.
* Shaolin Monkey Warriors are monks warriors that imitate the behaviour of a monkey to use for fights. Here is a video of a warrior using a stick for his purposes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUiyJnDYO8Q

2. I like the old guy rig from animschool, I think it would be cool to put him in a scenario where he is fishing and gets into a fight with the fish pulling the rod

For my pirate Idea
I want it to be a full body shot staged similar like this and Iw ould love the iguana rig to be on his shoulder as his pet.

Here are the the dialogues that i found for that.

What do you think? Class?

Thank you and sorry for the long post.

Welcome to Spring 2016 session at Anim C!

Hi Class, I'm looking forward to seeing you all this Wednesday night. Don't forget to have your demo reels ready if you're new to my class!

This is a private blog on which you can share your work with me and your classmates in between classes.  I encourage you to leave feedback for each other.  I will add comments as my schedule allows.

Here is a compilation of my very first animation exercises at Pixar, back when I started in 2000.  How nice of them to let me stay!

You can see my more recent work on my Vimeo channel, though it needs to be updated.
